Madhu Kumar Marasini is the Secretary (Finance) at the Ministry of Finance. This is his second term as Finance Secretary. Prior to this, he served as the Secretary at Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, and Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers. He has also served as the Financial Comptroller General of Nepal.
He has been in civil service for over 32 years. He has also served as Secretary in the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Planning, in Lumbini province, Nepal. In the past, Mr. Marasini has worked almost 26 years within the Ministry of Finance in different capacities, that includes, Joint Secretary at International Economic Cooperation Coordination Division and Budget and Program Division, Deputy Director General, Inland Revenue Department as well as Department of Investigation of Money Laundering, among others.
Additionally, Mr. Marasini has had extensive international experience. He has served in a diplomatic capacity as Consul General of Nepal in New York City, USA. Furthermore, he has held a prestigious advisory role to the Executive Director representing the Southeast Asia Constituency at the World Bank Group's headquarters in Washington D.C., USA. Mr. Marasini's leadership extends to the realm of international finance, where he played a pivotal role as Chief Negotiator for the establishment of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). He has also served as Alternate Governor for Nepal in various Multilateral Development Banks.
Mr. Marasini was the focal person in organizing the International Conference on Nepal’s Reconstruction immediately after the massive earthquake in Nepal in April 2015. The conference was successfully concluded with a pledging of over $4.1 billion by the international donors.
Academically, Mr. Marasini has earned Master's degree in in International and development Economics from the Australian National University, Australia; Executive education in public finance and leading economic growth from the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University; Diploma in Management from Carlse Duisberg College, Bremen, Germany and Master's degree in Public Administration and Bachelor’s degree in Law from Tribhuvan University, Nepal.
